Removing Internal site page from most common sorce sites

Why do my Hit List reports show my own site (www.mycompany.com) as a "Most Common Source Site" or "Most Common Source URL (referrer)"?

Even if you have already removed all internal traffic under Options/Updates (ie internal IPs, etc.) your home page is likely one of the biggest "Source Sites" or "Source URLs" you will encounter. Why? Because if a visitor goes to your home page (ie www.yourcompany.com/default.htm) typically they will browse deeper into your site, following links off your home page. When this happens, your home page is "referring" these visitors deeper into your site. Thus the "source URL" for the new page a visitor is now seeing was the home page of your site (or the Source Site being "yourcompany.com" as your home page is on www.yourcompany.com).

Thus, without the quick adjustment explained below, Hit List will usually report your home page as one of the "most common source sites" or "most common source URLs" as your home page typically refers most people deeper into your site, especially the first time they come to your site.

    1) Highlight the report you're running (ie Complete Analysis) and click Design.

    2) Highlight the "Most Common Source Sites" element and click Properties.

    3) Go to the Definition tab, and note the "ignore requests from (e.g. www.mycompany.com)" setting, and fill in your domain there as indicated, then hit OK.

    4) Go to "most common source URLs (referrers)" if this element is in your report (it may not be) and repeat steps 2-3.

    5) Hit OK and re-run the report. Now you won't see your domain pop up as a "most common source site" or "most common source URL".
