BMJ ramps-up web analytics
Pilot HitList Adopted Ahead of New
Publishing Initiatives
BMJ Publishing Group Limited, the UK’s
leading medical publisher, has selected Pilot® HitList™ as
its web analytics platform. The software provides web analytics
and reporting capabilities that will underpin the publisher’s
drive to provide a rich and measurable base of content for
the global medical community.
Pilot HitList is being introduced to provide more accurate
analysis of how visitors use BMJPG’s 27 online titles.
This includes the flagship journal BMJ’s website bmj.com,
which contains more than 35,000 articles. Its ABCE results
for October 2002 were 5,095,039 page impressions, 470,904
sessions and 946,205 visits.
The decision to adopt a new analytics platform comes ahead
of significant changes to the structure and charging model
for the largest of BMJPG’s titles, bmj.com. The organisation
has recently committed to charge some users for content from
2005 as the proportion of online versus print readers continues
to shift towards the web. It is expected that insight provided
by the new analytics platform will help the organisation
plan changes to site design, optimise the usability of its
sites and measure the way visitor behaviour and profiles
change once a charge is introduced.
“Usability has been a key priority for us since we
first went online in 1995,” said Geetha Balasubramaniam,
product manager for bmj.com. “Our visitors need to
sift through a massive amount of content and we have to make
it as easy
as possible for them to find what they need. Web analytics
is a powerful supporting tool.”
Another reason for adopting the new system is to measure
the effect of specific campaigns – email initiatives
and specific co-operative activities designed to increase
click-through rates.
BMJ Journals Web Administrator Dominic Mitchell comments, “We
want to test how users respond to specific areas of functionality.
In a recent survey almost everything people asked for we
already offer – it’s just people don’t
know about it. We want to make those capabilities easier
to find, something that analytics will help to achieve.”
“We’re a very open, transparent publisher because
of our remit and affiliation with the British Medical Association,” he
continues. “Being able to explore all aspects of our
site usage and publish relevant data is central to our values.”
BMJ has been committed to the ABC ELECTRONIC standard since
2000 and is migrating this analysis onto the Pilot HitList
platform. ISSEL, Pilot Software’s European distributor,
is an Associate Subscribers to ABC ELECTRONIC, which provides
access to the knowledge required to achieve this important
certification, which is a benchmark for advertisers.
BMJPG is one of the first UK customers to adopt Pilot HitList
5.5, which offers an enhanced user-interface and new reporting
functionality including Web Dashboards, Conversion Manager,
Funnel Reporting and Interactive Path Explorer. These enable
business users across a company to transform Web site data
trends into strategic business decisions quickly and easily.
