Pilot Software Named an Intelligent Enterprise "Company
to Watch"
Increasing recognition that true performance management
requires more than just relabeled business intelligence technology
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., May 15, 2006 — Pilot® Software
Inc., the original provider of operational performance management
solutions, today announced it has been selected by Intelligent
Enterprise editors as one of its 2006 "Companies to
Watch". This recognition from a highly-influential industry
magazine comes on the heels of high praise from several other
important performance management influencers, including Ventana
Research and Aberdeen Research.
"Pilot is not just another
business intelligence vendor that slaps the performance management
label on some BI technology," said David Stodder, editor-in-chief,
Intelligent Enterprise. "Pilot has a Performance Management
offering that leverages their BI heritage, while showcasing
other new and innovative concepts. This is why we named them
a company to watch in 2006."
While business intelligence
technology allows organizations to publish metrics on dashboards,
many organizations have discovered that metrics by themselves
often do not help them improve performance. This is largely
due to the fact that metrics lack context that explains what
they are, how they’re calculated, and how they’re
to be used. As a result, metrics often are only well understood
by those individuals who populate them. Business intelligence
tools exacerbate these issues in the following ways:
- focusing
on quantitative metrics based on transactional data to
the exclusion of qualitative indicators based on subjective
information;
- limiting
the ability for stakeholders to participate in ongoing
discussions which eliminates opportunities for collaboration
and capturing
of best practices; and
- ignoring the need to collect
and approve the unstructured information associated with
metrics such as target values, exception conditions,
and commentary.
"We are very pleased to be named a company
to watch by Intelligent Enterprise in recognition of our
innovative and patented approach to performance management," said
Jonathan D. Becher, CEO and president of Pilot Software. "In
their quest for improved performance, many organizations have
deployed metrics-based dashboards built with business intelligence
tools. Unfortunately,
metrics is only one part of the equation. Only when goals,
initiatives and metrics — the three cornerstones of
performance management — are aligned can an organization
succeed in realizing its objectives and actually improve
performance."
Pilot Software’s flagship performance
management offering, PilotWorks, is the only product on the
market with the ability to manage goals, initiatives and
metrics in one comprehensive yet modular offering. As the
Intelligent Enterprise editors noted in their award, Pilot
goes beyond other vendors who attempt to confuse buyers by
putting "lipstick on a pig" and provides a true
performance management solution. In addition, PilotWorks
is designed with Pilot’s unique incremental, middle-out
approach in mind. Organizations can launch their performance
management program anywhere in the organization — not
necessarily in a top-down manner — first focusing on
high-impact areas and then rolling out to the rest of the
organization. Unlike other performance management solutions
that don’t allow for independence, with Pilot, this
initial performance management foothold is not in danger
of becoming a silo, disconnected from the rest of the organization.
Furthermore, each individual component in PilotWorks can
be deployed individually or as part of a larger effort, in
whatever combination suits the organization. No other performance
management system allows users such a high level of personalization
while providing the organization as a whole seamless scalability
and cohesiveness.
