ISSEL GeoCountry adds accurate country information
to Hit List databases. Normally the Hit List country information
is based on the site-names of the visiting computers where
a fixed mapping of the top site name domain determines country.
That means that all .uk domains are mapped to the UK but also
that all .com domains are mapped to the US. Since many companies
in the UK and Europe often select to use .com domain names
this kind of mapping may skew the picture.
Issel GeoCountry instead takes the visitor IP-addresses already
stored in the Pilot HitList database and looks them up in
a built-in database extracted from the publicly available
RIPE
Whois system. Since this system stores actual registration
information about the IP-addresses is it inherently more accurate
then a mapping against top domain names.
